Life has ups and downs. Good seasons, difficult seasons, and moments when we are simply trying to make it through the day.

But sometimes, what drains us most isn’t even our own “down.” It is constantly carrying the downs of the people around us.

When you care deeply about people, it is easy to absorb their emotions. Their bad mood becomes your bad mood. Their problems follow you home. Their disappointment makes you question yourself. Before you know it, you are spending so much energy managing everyone else’s feelings that you barely have space for your own.

So how do you stay connected to yourself without living under the shadow of those around you?

Learn What Is Yours to Carry

One question I am learning to ask myself is:

Is this mine to carry?

Someone can be upset without you needing to fix it. Someone can be disappointed in you without you automatically being wrong. Someone can have a bad day without it becoming your bad day.

Caring about people doesn’t mean carrying every emotion they bring into your life. Sometimes the healthiest thing you can do is listen, support them, and still protect your own peace.

Come Back to Yourself

When was the last time you asked yourself what you actually wanted? Not what your family needs. Not what your friends expect. Not what everyone else thinks you should be doing.

Rediscovering yourself can be simple. Take the walk. Start writing again. Travel. Pray. Exercise. Sit quietly. Try something new. Revisit something you once loved. Create moments where you can hear your own voice again.

Know When to Create Distance

Not every negative person needs to be completely removed from your life. Sometimes you simply need boundaries.

Stop answering every call immediately. Leave conversations that constantly become negative. Stop overexplaining your decisions. Give yourself permission to say no. But also pay attention to patterns. If someone consistently leaves you feeling drained, anxious, guilty, small, or emotionally exhausted, ask yourself:

Do I feel like myself around this person, or am I constantly managing myself around them?

Sometimes the answer tells you everything you need to know.

Choose Yourself Too

Choosing yourself doesn’t mean you don’t love other people. You can love someone and need space. You can forgive someone and still set boundaries. You can wish someone well and decide they no longer need unlimited access to you.

And you don’t have to make someone a villain before deciding that something is no longer healthy for you. Maybe rediscovering yourself isn’t about becoming someone new at all. Maybe it’s about coming back to the person you were before you became so busy carrying everyone else.

So today, ask yourself: What am I carrying that was never mine to carry? Maybe it’s time to put it down.
